CURRENT PROJECTS
The Foundation has “broken-ground” on the construction phase of a Federal Highway Administration, National Scenic and Cultural Byways Program approved Visitor Welcoming Center constructed on Museum property, that will provide modern facilities for the touring public. The Center will enhance the Foundation’s capacity to serve the public, add to the region’s vitality and economic growth. The Visitor Center will be a focal point for the Museum and tie our campus together.
The Federal Highway Administration, the NH Office of Energy and Planning, and the Poore Family Foundation for North Country Conservancy, have determined that phase-one and phase-two of a two-phase project designed to provide safe access from the National Byway, NH Route 145, in Stewartstown, to an important historical New Hampshire landmark, is an eligible project for funding under the National Scenic Byway Program. The Poore Family Foundation for North Country Conservancy, is a New Hampshire based, state and federally sanctioned 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization. The foundation owns, operates and maintains the Poore Family Homestead Historic Farm Museum, a 100-acre original settlement nestled in the hills of the Connecticut River Valley in Stewartstown, NH.
Due to the insight and generosity of one man, J. C. Kenneth Poore, The Poore Family Foundation for North Country Conservancy was founded in 1979. Kenneth was the last Poore descendant and the first Chairman of the Board for The Foundation. Kenneth bequeathed his family’s 100-acre settlement, land, buildings and contents, to The Foundation he created, to serve as a historical and educational site, to a way of life that existed prior-to rural electrification.
The Poore Family Foundation can take pride in its early accomplishments. With the restructuring of the Board in 1994 and a Needs assessment supported by the N.H. Charitable Foundation, a set of attainable short term and long term goals have been established and a productive effort was under way to establish a living museum that will provide a tourist attraction and seasonal employment for some north country residents. The association formed with the Canaan, Vermont high school Building Construction and Restoration Carpentry Program, which enabled some stabilization of the buildings and the construction of a utility shed. The Balsams Grand Resort Hotel and The Foundation had initialized plans that brought their guests to The Museum for a visit and box lunch. The open barn and regular weekly hours from June through September drew over 2000 visitors to the Homestead. The partnerships that was formed with summer Student Youth programs has enabled the Poore Farm to complete a large amount of the maintenance of the grounds and collection, build an information booth and provided an historic and educational experience for disadvantaged New Hampshire and Vermont youth.
The Board of Directors have regular meetings and planning sessions, staff the Museum, work weekends and bring in groups of volunteers to improve the site. The vitality and direction this board has, is known throughout the community and state. Our Congressman, Charles F Bass, had nominated The Foundation for the 1999 National Award for Museum Service, awarded yearly by the Institute of Museum and Library Services. Congressman Bass has taken a special interest in, what he called "this historic jewel in New Hampshire's Great North Woods" and initiated a fund raising event/picnic for the Foundation.
John Frisbee, former Executive Director of The New Hampshire Historical Society and also one of our first assessors, said: “the Poore Homestead is an extraordinary Northern New Hampshire historical resource and I greatly admire and appreciate the major undertaking of the Foundation to stabilize the Poore Family Farm, preserve it and make it available for public use and historic interpretation. Two of the Foundation’s core tenets are “giving back to the community” and “youth participation”. These tenets are upheld by reinvesting raised funds back into the local economy and through associations with two local high schools: the Canaan, Vermont, Memorial High School, Building Construction and Restoration Carpentry trades program and the Colebrook, NH, Academy High School National Honor Society Students and Student Council members. Working with these youth and other local youth groups is a time proven success story that builds a strong community bond, especially with our youth. This year, 2013 will be Colebrook Academy’s 13th consecutive annual day of service and spring clean up at the Poore Museum. All Foundation expenditures, whenever possible, are invested in the community to bolster the local economy. In excess of $300,000 has been distributed to date.
The Foundation has enjoyed significant growth in recent years and is proud of its’ many years of service to the community.
* We recently completed a multiple year/phase Arts initiative, developing an amphitheater and a covered band shell venue, increasing our capacity to host outdoor traditional performing Arts events. Our amphitheater and the adjacent parking have added to the infrastructure and vitality of the region, and will help meet the growing demand of the local communities and tourists alike for more cultural events like these.
* As part of our Land management and conservation plan, The Foundation has embarked on an ambitious effort to establish and maintain a 70-acre environmental study area that includes a trail system and a Nature Center to enhance science curriculum in the local schools and provide educational and recreational opportunities for the public.
* We also “broke-ground”, began the construction phase of a Federal Highway Administration approved and partially funded National Byway Visitor Welcoming Center that will further enhance our capacity to serve the community and provide modern facilities for the traveling public.
The Poore Family Foundation Board of Directors and our volunteer base has increased in numbers and are effectively working together to manage these additional services and keep pace with the organization's growing responsibilities.
The Foundation is in good standing with the State of NH and works closely with the State’s Attorney General’s Office, Division of Charitable Trusts (specifically with Terry Knowles, Registrar of Charitable Trusts) and makes a concerted effort to attend informational seminars promoted by this agency to better understand our roles as trustees both legally and ethically.
The yearly support from the Tillotson North Country Foundation, the NH State Council on the Arts, as well as past support from the NH Charitable Foundation, the NH Electric Foundation, the Federal Highway Administration, Institute of Museum and Library Services, many other philanthropic organizations, businesses, individuals and our many volunteers, is a significant acknowledgment of The Foundation's successful track record of providing intelligent programs, while improving the region's vitality and infrastructure. The Museum attracts students from three local school districts, visitors and travelers from all over the country and world. This year, 2013, will be our 19th year of service as an important historical and cultural New Hampshire destination.
The Directors take the responsibility and stewardship of this inherited homestead most seriously. The Museum is more than just a treasure of physical artifacts, buildings and land in NH’s great North Country, but also as our mission statement, articles of incorporation and by-laws state: “the spirit, values, way of life, and philosophy of living of the settlers on the headwaters of the Connecticut River Valley”, which reflect those of the founders and builders of our country, the United States of America.

a house [circa 1825], barn, several outbuildings and an unbroken collection of everyday life items that extend from pre-civil war to the present.
The Foundation’s Mission
is to conserve, continue and propagate the traditional spirit, values and philosophy of living of the settlers who lived on the headwaters of the Connecticut River Valley.
